Jan Brett has quite a few snowy books that are great for winter, including some lovely Christmas themed ones. The Hat and The Mitten (listed below) are definitely my favourites though. The Hat is the story of a hedgehog named Hedgie (who also appears in another of Brett’s books that we love, Hedgie’s Surprise) who gets his head stuck in a wool sock that has blown off a clothesline.

This book, with limited vocabulary and fantastic illustrations, tells the greatness of snow play from the point of view of children and a dog. My kids loved this one. It was one of the first books they memorized so they could "read" it/5().

It just doesn’t get better than Peter headed out into the fresh snow to play every classic winter game there is, from snowball fights to making foot prints to creating snow.

It's short, but has a great story and the snow plays a big part in it. It's not your typical novel, but I highly recommend it. It draws inspiration from the tradition of Icelandic sagas, magical realism as a genre and yet it's minimalistic in style.
